One needs to understand the origins of "reality TV". It was a short film called the Blair Witch Project. A movie camera is discovered in the woods supposedly shot by a group of amateur archeologists. They were investigating the site of a gallows used to hang witches during the Salem witch trials. A number of unexplained phenomenon occurs and the crew begin to disappear one by one. The entire film was a hoax but a lot of people believed ghosts had finally been captured on film. Film makers immediately saw that awkward camera shots and clumsy editing appealed to the voyeur in the audience assignment writing company. Up to this point they had worked incredibly hard to get perfect cinematography but now they realized the potential of what seemed little more than some camera hidden in the bathroom. This had already been tried decades earlier with a series called "candid camera". This was more or less a comedy show which filmed the often hilarious reactions of ordinary people who get fooled into interacting with actors in make believe scenarios.
